slipstream . . .

Nick Drake is one of the gods. Long slipped this mortal coil, but living on down the streams. I stumbled into Alexi Murdoch while watching Sam Mendes' film Away We Go. No surprise the ND echoes. They're both in the slipstream.

Teresa: As I mentioned, ND is one of the gods. Died a few months short of 26, back in 1974. Beautiful blending of jazz, folk, rock. Spare discography; music continues to wow folks. I was not surprised to find comparisons to ND in my readings about Alexi Murdoch.

I was not familiar with either artist. The first piece could be a soundtrack to one of your poems - it felt just like the sound part of one of your pieces.
The second, what a sad thing to be such an artist and just disappear. Beautiful!

Saw Alexi Murdoch about 4 years ago at ACL festival which was not the best venue for his music. I had been listening to Orange Sky and Breathe on KGSR and couldn't get them out of my mind. The CD hadn't come out yet, so it was the best way to get a fix. You are right, when I first heard those tunes, I wondered if Nick had come back. Thank goodness, Alexi seems to have a better mind state than ND. John Aielli interviewed him around 2006, maybe 2007. Really an interesting interview;if interested, you might be able to find it in the archives. I think John found a soul mate that day.

Dee: AM's definitely got me hooked. So strange that when I was first introduced to ND he had already been dead for a few years. Both are trance-inducing.

Anon: From what I've read, it looks like AM is 180 degrees from ND's state of mind. I looked yesterday for tour dates: Austin seemed a likely destination. I will definitely try to run down the Aielli interview. Thank you for the tip.

My bad. I have a song by Alexi Murdoch in a mix album and it's beautiful but I never went further than that. Too many songs, ears that are too lazy.

DM, you have ears for all the good music out there. My favorite AM songs right now are "Orange Sky" and "Blue Mind."

Here's to Portugal getting by Spain into the next round!
