poem: whispers here
the imam fainted &
the english teacher right
alongside, it ain't often
the rest of you integrates
the last of your coffee grounds
tumbling futures
orange and blue,
sifting through the images
of damned if you don't
& you better:
the liveliest of livelies
in the Carolinas
never withered with such
fury, sampling the better
days, severing ties
with all they jerry garcia
splotches, wine has
a better way of saying
no when you rack
the eight-ball in the center
you hear all
the lasting variations
all the exponential
eggplant growth
on the distaff
side, and as you're rounding
third for home
the whispers:
here is your nowhere
here is your noun
here is the radiance of
your thistly
crown.

And what is exponential eggplant growth on the distaff side?? A truly interesting string of words.
I had never heard this song - a new favorite!! I forget that Joni has aged right along with me. What is the Jerry Garcia connection? I know they crossed paths musically but I am for thinking that maybe you found more on their history? I don't know about orange but I got tangled up in blue with this :) Wikipedia is a wonderful thing, especially when visiting Muravia.
thistly crown? Damned if you don't & you better? Loved the sifting through and rounding third and I too am curious about eggplant growth (though it is a perfectly lovely shade of purple and wonderful when coated with panko bread crumbs and fried in olive oil)
After Joni, for my money, went round the bend with her Mingus and Don Juan's forays, she came back around (again, for my money) with this beauty on Wild Things Run Fast.
As for the poem, it's all collage, all connections are as tenuous as moving scraps of paper around on a table top and then gluing them down. There is always leaning into the wind, and playing with opposites.
Teresa: EEG on the distaff side? Dreams of sugar plum eggplant parmigiana? That string of pearls dropped from the heavens.
