So beautiful, almost better than the orginial. I wish she had smoked less and could still hit those really incredible high notes. Have you listened to Regina Carter's Paganini: after a dream? No words, but so beautiful, so soulful. She has a new CD in January called Rethread. Heard her group at Birdland in NYC last April and have been waiting aftersense.
Anon: I agree: there's a soulful smokiness that came with her devotion to tobacco (a shamanistic devotion, it seems), but there are ranges in her voice lost, too. I've not heard the RC material you mention: I'll go looking for it now. Thank you for stopping by.
Teresa: A beautiful song and performance all round, and Joni's voice in this range carries it well, the sweet melancholy. The song was inspired by her parents' romance, it seems, but like all her stuff, goes way beyond the personal. I don't know if her shamanistic take on smoking was pure, or at least part defensiveness in her usual contrarian way. It definitely took the high notes out of her voice, but those were notes I was less enamored of in her delivery.

Really, really nice, Murat. I didn't know Joni smoked, shamanistically or otherwise. I guess thinking about it you can hear it in her voice.
