Sunday Scribbling #140: Transmissions

[Deere John]

100% Dyno-tested,
1993 Dodge Caravan,
Beloved white beast—
Homophobic,
Transtectonic,
Ectoplasmic,
Heliographic—
Subduer of all caution
Left and right:
Ran out on me she did, the day
Of the great Huebner climb,
To school I was a-going:
Bread to bake,
Money to earn,
Desires to slake,
Invitational tennis tourniquet
Of wisdom teeth:
Neurotic mishmash,
Vegetable jello,
The chasms of personal fire.
A debt unpaid,
A past unloaded, the visual
Equipoise of equestrian truss—
These are the days, these the inquisitions,
These the end of the days of
Infinite jest, the mysterious
flavor, corpus
delecti, after
The Wackenhut diadems,
This your variable
Transmission, your
In-executable vibe, your
Inexorable immutable crust.

Transmissions indeed! Very interesting and much to ponder.

Alisa: Tradition is all in the choice, isn't it? Automatic or stick?

We sure depend on those transmissions, don't we? Here's hoping ours holds up this weekend; modern transmissions, I'm told, work best in automatic.

May the dyno gods be with you: the death of transmission is a sorrowful thing. It was a dewy-wet walk back that day.

I enjoyed that ectoplasmic departure, that variable grapefruit-like transmission of inex-immu vibes. Next, I’m expectin’ a new tradition to be startin’. I’m expectin’ to go lookin’ for you but not findin’ you. And just about when I give up all hope, I’ll hear someone say you’ve moved to meme-ville and taken muratville with you.
They’ll say, “Yeah, and that lime green Deere dude been hangin’ out at velvet verbosity’s 100 word challenge, too, and I’ve even seen ‘im at six sentences. I expect soon he’ll take up with the 3WW folks.”
"You don’t say," I’ll say.
And he’ll say, “Well, that’s what I heard, anyway.”
"Better fluid, synthetic over conventional?" I'll ask.
And he'll answer, "I guess." :-)

Ms A: I can buy the lookin' not findin' theory, but there's no way in hell you will find me at any of the other prompt troughs. Amy Rigby's the one who got me here and she's long flew the coop. I've made my bed with these hallmark prompters - just once could we get a prompt like, say, Funyons and Sartre? - and here I will lie.

I tried my hand at the 100 words site a couple of years ago, but that's not a place for fully employed people, even those with lots of free periods during the day.

Synoptic fluids, I'd say. Peace/out, sister.

HP and I don’t mean Hewlett Packard! Ah know daz right! The axiom came to me early on: write what you like and just stick the word in there somewhere…which is a slightly less defiant variation of your technique of late. I like the community, though, have found some really cool folks there such as your happy self. Sooo, I was snooping ‘round McSweeneys.org and the answer came to me, the answer which you, with your high speed IQ, have already thought of, so I’m just here to push it. Start your own.

You sly co-opter, Lady A: now where's the fun in organized anarchy? You saw what it did to Dada and French Surrealism: they Freuded out. Believe me, though I give them unholy hell, I do actually 'preciate what the HP-girls have served up for all of us, the blessed space they have created and hold.

Besides, I'm of the "Tell It Slant" sororfraternity: if I go straight at the idea of tradition, I'm liable to do it (and perhaps me) some harm: best to circle and slant, float mariposa, sting bee: the heart will be in there somewhere, lurking.

I love the community, and it's all about 'em. I'm in so deep with our little burgeoning tribe, I forget sometimes that it's all about the HP girls that got us here, and for that they are gonna have to have their own ode.

I like the push, but isn't it already here? Aren't we (and all the others in our blogrolls) already it?

Bless you, DOM.

Not everyone can mix John Deere with word games, Freud and Dada notwithstanding. I love the energy and surprise of your writings as well as the community that brings us together. So keep telling it slant.

Beth: I'm very happy to be part of the tribe, and glad you are here as well.

That's the best Deere John poem I ever read. Not your garden-variety variable transmission. Something I can sink my wisdom tooth into--that immutable crust.

You have another annoying award over at my place...

Ms San: I prefer deep dish, but immutable crust will do.

Dare I go look?
