This Was Beautiful

Regarding Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama, from The New Republic:

Powell seemed particularly angry about the accusation, stoked by some McCain supporters, that Obama is a Muslim - and not only because it's inaccurate. (Says Powell:)

"The correct answer is 'He's not a Muslim. He's a Christian.' ... But the really right answer is, 'What if he is?' Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer is 'no.' That's not America. Is there something wrong with some seven-year-old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she can be president?"

Didn't you just love this interview. Colin Powell is such an eloquent, powerful speaker and I do believe I will add him to my list of heroes. How about you?

For CP to speak into the face of the rampant zeitgeist of American xenophobia...I found this to be as radically inclusive a statement as any by the man he was endorsing. My hat is off to both men.

Amen to that, and did you know amen is a "shared" word, not just uttered by Christians - it is also shared with Judaism and Islam...so be it, truly, verily.

That is VERY beautiful, Paschal. Now I want to read the entire interview.

CP, with his endorsement, has forever severed his ties with the Republican Party. I don't think they will ever forgive him. But, the man showed integrity and that he was his own man that sung to his own tune when he left under the Bush Administration because of differences with Bush and where we were heading as a country. I would love it if Obama picked him as his Secretary of State. I was always a great admirer of his. Loved it...and the timing. Perfect.

jsd: Well, then, Amen to all that, indeed!

San: I think I've seen mention of the available video of the entire interview online. TNR can probably lead you there.

Rebecca: I was blown away by the splendor of CP's words here. I've not been a full time fan all along. I hearken back to his UN speech, defending the squalor of the Bush administration's WMD tripe. But this endorsement, and his wise eloquence, is wonderful.

It's already been said, but Amen! Very little from this election season has cheered me, but somehow this did. There is hope for common decency.

Amen, Om, and everything in between to that! I have always had respect for Colin, and this was his chance to stand tall since the UN debacle. I hope it makes a difference for the undecided voters.

I voted tonight, and it was quite a moving moment, indeed.

Oh this was good! Thank you for sharing it, Paschal. I too am going looking for the entire video. And I need to vote soon I guess. I just want to find a full copy of the ballot so that I can check my understanding of the issues and people up for selection.

Hugs to you and T.

T/M11'sMS (though I don't know why she sez Main, since she is the Only: One and Only, to be exact): Welcome to the party.

The little man and I were in line on the first day of early voting; it was the first election in all my qualified 37 years of doing so that I felt a rush in being part of the process. Having Walden standing there as we made our historical choice for Obama was wonderful; he thinks it's ridiculous that he can't vote at his age.

Lee: Have fun standing in all the buzz of the early voting lines. It was pretty cool. Lots of folks turning out.
